MOVE offers a best practice framework for professionals and parents working with disabled children and adults. The MOVE Programme serves to bring care services together, encouraging collaborative working at all levels whilst placing a structure around work that is already taking place. The health and social benefits of this approach are supported by academic research.
As the MOVE Programme is not prescriptive or a therapy technique, it does not come into conflict with any other therapy or learning approaches. It has been found that the MOVE Programme can easily be implemented alongside other approaches and therapies. For example, there are schools successfully using MOVE alongside Bobath and Conductive Education. Why the MOVE Programme is right for your organisation:
- Current - it supports and meets the criteria of all current statutory and advisory guidance frameworks for education, social services and health care
- Integrated service delivery programme - provides a structure for all services to achieve “more for less” in an integrated way as the team around the child
- Inclusive programme - MOVE is not a therapy technique but is a planning tool that combines common educational and therapy aims into a child’s IEP. Therapists are an intrinsic part of the team to ensure the child’s goals are met
- High expectations - MOVE helps everyone to think outside the box. It is suitable for a wide range of physical disabilities with no child being considered too disabled. These children can achieve so much
- MOVE for families - MOVE is applicable to all settings, including the home, with all goals being relevant across them all, Parents can help and see MOVE making a real difference to their child’s life and also their own
- Equipment - implementing MOVE does not mean that lots of new, costly equipment needs to be bought. MOVE provides a structured system for reducing support, under the supervision of therapy staff to ensure a safe and appropriate rate to allow for the learning of new skills
- Cost Effective - the MOVE model is designed to be cost effective and sustainable when it is established within a school or care centre
- Current research - shows that goal-oriented targeted intervention with opportunities for regular practice produces the best long-term outcomes for an individual something central to MOVE’s ethos
- Maintenance of weight-bearing throughout schooling and into adulthood - a core MOVE aim . One shouldn’t assume that as a child grows bigger they will become less mobile and rely more on substitutional equipment. MOVE aims to keep the individual as active as possible

Training Options for Professionals
MOVE Practitioner training is available to anyone working with those who have physical disabilities and/or complex needs, including parents, teachers, therapists and carers. Please see MOVE Training for further information on in-house, open and funded training courses.

Ways for schools/centres to get involved
Participation in MOVE Day is open to all schools/centres whether or not they use the MOVE Programme. The event is themed and takes place in May every year. Click here for further information.
